I've "been there, done that and got the tee-shirt to prove it." I've seen launches that were text book fabulous from the start and others that went sideways in a hurry and we had to get creative to get them back on track.

But before I get into the nitty gritty of what constitutes a successful launch, let's talk about why you want to do product launches in the first place.

You might be surprised at the number of ways a product launch can help you. A product launch can:

So there are a lot of good reasons why you want to integrate product launches into your overall marketing program. And there's no question if you're going to go through the trouble of putting together a product launch you want it to be successful. However, you need the RIGHT information if you want to create and execute a SUCCESSFUL product launch (and you don't always get that from buying someone else's system). Consider this:

  1. There are a lot of ways to end up with a successful product launch. But not ALL ways will work for you or your ideal clients. (And if you pick the wrong one I don't care how closely you follow the "system," you're going to be in the 80% whose launch fails.)

  2. Copy DOES matter (in fact, the right copy can rescue a launch going sideways in a hurry). But…

  3. You DON'T have to sound hype-y or over-the-top or like you're selling your soul to have a good launch. (In fact, it's better if you DON'T)

  4. The reason why product launches succeed or fail has little to do with how good the product is and has EVERYTHING to do with how good the copy and marketing is behind it. (The vast majority of time the one who has the best marketing wins. The better mousetrap doesn't sell, the better marketing does.)

  5. Now, that doesn't mean you should be selling junk. Look, marketing gets people in the door so they try something ONCE. If they have a bad experience, not only do you risk getting tons of returns but they'll probably never buy anything from you again (along with telling their friends not to buy anything from either).

It's not your fault you're confused about product launches or you haven't had good success with them. There's a lot of misinformation out there about product launches and for the most part, product launches aren't being taught correctly. People are learning a formula or a system or a blueprint – they learn how to follow the steps but they don't necessarily know or understand the "why" behind it.  If the launch is a success, then it doesn't matter…but if it's not, they don't have a clue how to get it back on track or what they did wrong. Let me explain why this is.

Here's the "science" behind product launches so you understand why some work…and the vast majority don't.

In essence, product launches are an extension of direct response copywriting. Here's why.

Let me start by defining direct response copywriting.  Direct response copywriting is about making sales directly from copy pieces (i.e. a long-copy online sales letter, like the one you're reading now, emails, direct mail, etc.). The copy itself is doing the heavy lifting – in other words, the copy does the selling (which is why it's called "direct response" because the customers are directly responding to the copy.)

Now let's look at product launches. Product launches are all about making sales based on a marketing strategy designed to get people to buy without you getting on the phone and making one-on-one sales calls. In other words, your customers are directly responding to the marketing strategy.

So, the more you can integrate direct response elements into a product launch, the more successful you'll be. Get it?

Okay, so this is a natural for me. My background is in direct response copywriting. I've studied psychological triggers around getting people to buy for years and then integrated them into copy. So it wasn't a big leap to start integrating them into a product launch. (And, besides that, I'm also a marketing strategist. I've been studying and helping my clients with their marketing for years.)
